ABS plastic injection mold
Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene(ABS) is a copolymer with good toughness and impact strength. ABS plastic moulding is a process that injects molten ABS plastic into a pre-cut mold, allowing it to cool and solidify as it is kept under constant pressure for a designated period. Once cooled and hardened, the final product pops out of the mold, ready to be packaged and shipped for further processing or use.
ABS injection molding process
ABS plastic moulding takes place according to the following steps:
Before injection, the mould is heated to allow ABS plastic to fill in the details of the mold. The injected plastics are about 1,000 times thicker than the nozzle used to inject them, so they have to be softened enough for effortless flow into all areas. This only takes a few seconds, but it accounts for 25% of cycle time.
Different plastic injection machines have different ways of accepting molten material from outside sources. Some use gravity, while others use pumps or vacuum-assisted feeders. It’s important to note that some moulds are cooled on the exterior, while others are in heated racks.
A screw turns and forces the molten material into the mould cavity under tremendous pressure. As soon as it enters, a coolant mist is used to reduce the temperature of the material, so it doesn’t overheat and damage the tooling. The pressure is maintained for the duration of the injection cycle. The length of time this takes varies according to factors such as:
- The mold temperature
- The viscosity of the material
- The mold design itself (shorter times are needed with complex moulds)
Plastics are petroleum products. Although injected plastics are heated up to 450° Fahrenheit, they cool rapidly as soon as the pressure is released once they enter the mold. This rapid cooling process allows these materials to retain their strength and durability for years.
After five or six seconds of cooling in the mold, the final product pops out, ready for processing or shipping. Before ejection, excess plastic is trimmed away using robotic arms (if required), always following strict FDA guidelines for contaminants like metal chips and debris that can occur during injection moulding.

There are two different types of mold tooling used in ABS plastic moulding, as follows.
Core and cavity:
This type of mould is used for thin-walled parts. They consist of a core and a cavity. The core shape forms the inner surface of the hole after the core has been pulled out from it. During operation, thin sheet metal or sand cores may be inserted into them to form undercuts.
Cores and slides:
These moulds are mainly used for more significant parts where sliding or stripping movements between active surfaces cannot be tolerated because solid cores would damage the mouldings. Many components use this style, such as thin-walled tubes, trays etc., which can be assembled later.
Hence, ABS injection molding is made with the help of core and cavity molds only.

Materials for mould manufacturing
There is the following list of materials required for ABS injection molding:
Common casting metals is steel that has been hardened to the desired degree. It can be either High-speed steel or Meehanite iron. The hardness of the steel should be at least 70 HRC (Rockwell Hardness C) which allows them to last longer.
Mould base plate:
This helps provide a stable surface for the mold and helps seal it tightly during injection and cooling. Usually, a ceramic or a polymer compound is used for this purpose.
These are divided into two types: Hot/ Cold Ejectors & Gas Ejector Pins; these ejector pins are designed depending on the complexity of the design of your products.
It is a metal bushing, usually made from Meehanite iron, that creates a pathway through which the molten material enters the mould cavity.
This small hole is used to evacuate gases from the mould cavity separately from the venting system.
